Since their discovery in 1940s, phosphate esters have been widely used across the industries. They offer excellent resistance to fire and wear & tear properties. Phosphate esters are used in compressors, turbines and hydraulic systems as they offer fire resistance. Coal tar derivatives were used for the synthesis of first commercially available phosphate ester product. Phosphate ester product are composed of isomeric aryl phosphate such as neurotoxic orthotolyl phosphate. Technological advancement are leading to the better manufacturing process control. The toxicity of the final product is also lowered by the modern technology. Currently other than the neurotoxic orthotolyl phosphate, other raw materials are also used for the synthesis of phosphate ester. The major use of phosphate is as a fire resistant to the non-aqueous base stocks and other synthetic materials. Phosphate ester have high ignition temperature and superior oxidation stability which makes them difficult to get heated up. Organic phosphorus materials such as phosphates, phosphonates and phosphites are being used as additives in the formulation of lubricants such as anti-wear additives, extreme pressure additives, stabilizers, metal passivators and antioxidants. The zinc di alkyl dithio phosphates are most widely used in the automotive engine lubricants.

Compounds formed by the replacement of hydrogen atoms of an acid by the hydrocarbon radical of ethyl are known as phosphate ester. Phosphate ester falls under the special class of anionic surface active agents. Phosphate ester are widely preferred over other ester based fluids owing to their superior performance and the safety advantages over other products. Phosphate esters are widely used as lubricants among other industrial uses because of their superior thermal stability and good lubrication characteristics. These properties of phosphate ester are major driving factor for its increased usage in lubricants, fire retardants and hydraulic systems.

The global phosphate esters market can be segmented based on type, application and geography. Based on type, it can be categorized as trialkyl phosphate esters, alkyl aryl phosphate esters, tri alkyl phosphate esters and others. Based on application, global market for phosphate ester can be segmented as lubricants, surfactants, plasticizers, fire retardants, hydraulic fluids, pesticides, paints & coating and others. Geographical segmentation is given as Asia-Pacific, Middle-East Africa, North America, South America and Europe.
